18.9 Explain why deploying software as a service can reduce the IT support costs for a company. What additional costs might arise if this deployment model is used?
Costs can be reduced in the basic computing support aspect. There is no longer a worry regarding the support of different operating systems or support for specific hardware since the service functionality is provided via a remote server with access through a web browser. At this point the only concern is for support and management of the network.
There is good fault handling because of the concurrent processing and the services' ability to continue in operation after faults have occurred. There is also lowered risk (or rather, lowered responsibility) of losing the user's data, as the server will maintain that user data and state during the session.
As far as additional costs, these can relate to SaaS complexity issues. It may be difficult to provide support and handle the system as different people may be required to handle different aspects of system support. Different parts of the system are independently managed, and in addition the network must be managed and supported. Top-down or hierarchical control are impossibilities because one person cannot be in charge of the entire system, therefore there may be potential organizational issues.
